Tokyo After Dark ยท What To Actually Do

15 Actually Good Things to Do in Tokyo at Night.

Tokyo doesn't really have one nightlife experience. You can eat yakitori under a railway line, sing badly at 2am, disappear into a six-seat bar, look across the entire city from above โ€” or meet strangers who completely change your plans. The trick is choosing the right night for you.

One thing before you go

Don't try to โ€œdo Tokyo nightlife.โ€ Pick one version of it.

Shinjuku, Shibuya and Roppongi can feel like completely different cities after dark. And some of the best nights aren't really nightlife at all. Start with one area and two or three ideas. Leave enough empty space in the night for something unexpected to happen.

The List

What to do in Tokyo tonight.

Not everything requires a reservation, a club outfit or staying awake until sunrise.

01
๐Ÿฎ

Start in a tiny izakaya

Forget the giant restaurant for one night. Find somewhere small, order a few plates and let the evening start slowly. Tokyo's tiny drinking spots are often more memorable than the famous ones.

Good for: your first proper Tokyo night
02
๐ŸŒƒ

See Tokyo from above

Tokyo makes more sense when you see how ridiculously far it continues in every direction. A high observation deck around sunset gives you daylight, blue hour and the city lights in one visit.

Good for: couples ยท photographers ยท first visits
03
๐Ÿœ

Go on a late-night food mission

Ramen at midnight tastes different. So does yakitori after three drinks. Pick something you haven't tried and make finding it part of the night instead of treating dinner as something to finish before nightlife starts.

Good for: basically everyone
04
๐ŸŽค

Do karaoke properly

Private-room karaoke is one of the easiest late-night activities in Tokyo because nobody outside your group cares whether you can actually sing. It also becomes extremely useful after the last train.

Good for: groups ยท rainy nights ยท after midnight
05
๐Ÿšถ

Walk Tokyo with no destination

Pick a dense neighborhood and wander. The interesting part of Tokyo at night often happens between the places you planned to visit: alleys, vending machines, tiny bars, late-night restaurants and streets you didn't know existed.

Good for: low-budget nights ยท photographers
06
๐ŸŽฎ

Lose an hour in an arcade

Rhythm games, claw machines, fighting games and floors of machines you may not completely understand. It's an easy way to add something playful between dinner and drinks.

Good for: non-drinkers ยท couples ยท groups
07
๐Ÿธ

Find a bar with fewer than 10 seats

Some Tokyo bars are essentially a counter, a bartender and a handful of strangers. They're not always easy for first-time visitors, but when you find a welcoming one, the intimacy is part of the experience.

Good for: curious travelers ยท slower nights
09
๐Ÿ—ผ

Take a night walk around Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower after dark still has something that photographs don't quite reproduce. Walk the surrounding streets rather than arriving, taking one photo and immediately leaving.

Good for: dates ยท quieter evenings
10
๐Ÿถ

Try something you've never ordered before

Sake, shochu, umeshu, Japanese whisky or a food you can't immediately identify. Tokyo is a good city for being mildly adventurous without turning dinner into a challenge.

Good for: food and drink people
11
๐ŸŽง

Stay out for the late-night version of Tokyo

Midnight changes the city. The trains stop, crowds thin in some places and intensify in others, and the people still outside have effectively committed to the night.

Good for: night owls ยท club nights
12
๐Ÿ›

End the night in a sento or spa

Not every Tokyo night needs to end in a nightclub. A late bath or sauna can be an excellent ending after hours of walking โ€” just check operating hours and tattoo policies before going.

Good for: tired legs ยท non-party nights
13
๐Ÿ“ธ

Photograph the city after the crowds change

Tokyo is visually different at 11pm than it is at 7pm. Reflections, signs, convenience stores, taxis and almost empty side streets can be more interesting than the obvious postcard locations.

Good for: photographers ยท solo wandering
14
๐Ÿฅƒ

Go bar hopping instead of choosing one bar

Tokyo rewards movement. A quiet first bar can become a loud second bar, which becomes karaoke, which somehow becomes ramen at 3am. Changing venues changes the social energy of a night.

Good for: people who get restless in one venue
15
๐ŸŒ…

See Tokyo at 5am once

You don't need to do it every night. But seeing the first trains start again while the previous night's crowd heads home is a strangely memorable Tokyo experience.

Good for: exactly once per trip
Where should I go?

Three areas. Three different nights.

Shinjuku

Tiny bars, izakayas, neon, late food, karaoke and streets that reward wandering.

BEST FOR โ†’ EXPLORING

Shibuya

Younger energy, busy streets, bars, music, shopping and plenty happening within walking distance.

BEST FOR โ†’ ENERGY

Roppongi

International crowds, bars, clubs and one of the easier areas for travelers to meet other people.

BEST FOR โ†’ SOCIAL NIGHTLIFE

Pick your night.

โ€œI don't really drink.โ€ Night view โ†’ dinner โ†’ arcade โ†’ walk โ†’ late dessert or spa.
โ€œI'm here alone.โ€ Eat somewhere casual โ†’ choose a social activity โ†’ meet people before committing to bars or clubs alone.
โ€œWe want Tokyo chaos.โ€ Izakaya โ†’ bar hopping โ†’ karaoke โ†’ club โ†’ convenience-store snack โ†’ first train.
โ€œWe're on a date.โ€ Sunset view โ†’ dinner โ†’ quiet cocktail bar โ†’ night walk.
โ€œI have no idea.โ€ Start around 7โ€“8pm in one neighborhood and don't over-plan. Tokyo is unusually good at filling in the blanks.

Want the night where you actually meet people?

Tokyo Pub Crawl has been bringing travelers, locals and newcomers together in Tokyo since 2011. If you're new to the city, it can also be a starting point: meet people tonight, then explore more of Tokyo โ€” or Japan โ€” together afterward.
